In the story of a seemingly hopeless Israel, we see that God is on the move even when it seems that all is lost. Saul has failed as king, so God sends Samuel to anoint a new king in Israel. We see as Samuel goes to the house of Jesse to anoint David that where we tend to look for impressive folks, God looks at the heart. Through providing David as the next king over Israel, who ultimately points to Jesus, we know that God provides a king for his people... and a good king is what we need.
